It's Official: Xmarks Not Shutting Down!

Finally, a shred of good news in otherwise sad, heartbreaking, fear-filled week: bookmark-syncing service Xmarks won't be shutting down after all.

As you may recall, Xmarks announced in late September that it was closing up shop, having run out of money and electing not to try a premium model.

But user outcry was tremendous, to the point where the developers asked for pledges to support a paid version of Xmarks. Tens of thousands of users signed up, but the total number was far shy of the 100,000 needed for the company to move forward. Luckily, it didn't matter, as reported today on the Xmarks blog:

I'm pleased to announce that we're in the final stages of completing a sale of Xmarks to a new owner who is 100% committed to keep our great browser sync service running smoothly.

The Xmarks service will evolve to have both a free component and a premium component â€" we'll share all the details once the deal is done.

Woo-hoo! Are you as happy with this news as I am? Now if we could just get a similar stay of execution for Drop.io...
