Interview With Don Henson

In an interview with CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart, Corvallis, Mont. resident Dan Henson talks about his experiences with his Remington Model 700 rifle. The following is a full transcript of the interview.

Don Henson: "I aimed and took it off safety and I go to pull the trigger and I can’t pull the trigger. So I can’t figure it out and I bring the gun back down and I’m fooling around with it and I hit the safety again like this, my fingers weren’t even close to the trigger and I’m holding it like this and it goes off."

Henson: "When I explained it to the wife and she said she had had a similar experience."

Henson: "I pull up my gun and take a careful aim to shoot and I move it off safety to fire and I can’t pull the trigger. And I’m trying to pull because the deer is standing there and I got a good sight on it and I can’t pull the trigger, so I bring the gun back down.

Henson: And I hit the safety with my finger with my finger off the trigger and all of a sudden it goes 'BOOM'. Just by hitting the safety again, it went off. Needless to say, we put the gun away and decided not to use it."

Henson: "She (my wife) had the same problem happen with her. And she was too embarrassed to tell me because she thought it was her problem and not the gun’s problem. Now we know it’s the gun’s problem and not our problem."

Henson: "Had I turned to show her what had gone wrong, I could have shot her and it’s very frightening."

Henson: "I’m trying to find a gunsmith who would look at it and I feel comfortable with and is familiar with the gun, other than Remington who would give me an idea of what it would take to fix the safety and to fix the problem. And if I can’t do that, I guess I’ll put the gun away or destroy the gun because I certainly can’t give it to my children or grandchildren knowing that it’s an accident that could happen."

Henson: "I’m very disappointed in Remington. I’ve had Remington ever since I was a child. I’ve had numerous Remington guns, different models and I know they’re a big company and I would think they would be more concerned with the problems that have occurred."

Henson: "There’s been no action by Remington, which is very disappointing."
