Interview With Don Henson
In an interview with CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart, Corvallis, Mont. resident Dan Henson talks about his experiences with his Remington Model 700 rifle. The following is a full transcript of the interview.
Don Henson: "I aimed and took it off safety and I go to pull the trigger and I cant pull the trigger. So I cant figure it out and I bring the gun back down and Im fooling around with it and I hit the safety again like this, my fingers werent even close to the trigger and Im holding it like this and it goes off."
Henson: "When I explained it to the wife and she said she had had a similar experience."
Henson: "I pull up my gun and take a careful aim to shoot and I move it off safety to fire and I cant pull the trigger. And Im trying to pull because the deer is standing there and I got a good sight on it and I cant pull the trigger, so I bring the gun back down.
Henson: And I hit the safety with my finger with my finger off the trigger and all of a sudden it goes 'BOOM'. Just by hitting the safety again, it went off. Needless to say, we put the gun away and decided not to use it."
Henson: "She (my wife) had the same problem happen with her. And she was too embarrassed to tell me because she thought it was her problem and not the guns problem. Now we know its the guns problem and not our problem."
Henson: "Had I turned to show her what had gone wrong, I could have shot her and its very frightening."
Henson: "Im trying to find a gunsmith who would look at it and I feel comfortable with and is familiar with the gun, other than Remington who would give me an idea of what it would take to fix the safety and to fix the problem. And if I cant do that, I guess Ill put the gun away or destroy the gun because I certainly cant give it to my children or grandchildren knowing that its an accident that could happen."
Henson: "Im very disappointed in Remington. Ive had Remington ever since I was a child. Ive had numerous Remington guns, different models and I know theyre a big company and I would think they would be more concerned with the problems that have occurred."
Henson: "Theres been no action by Remington, which is very disappointing."
