Infant stabbed in Baltimore; Mother in custody

Updated 3:07 PM ET

(CBS/AP) BALTIMORE - Baltimore police say a mother has stabbed her infant daughter in the chest and neck at a social services building.

The 8-month-old baby is listed in stable condition at Johns Hopkins Children's Center. The mother is in custody and has been taken for a mental health evaluation.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the stabbing occurred just before 10 a.m. Tuesday at a Department of Social Services building. Police department spokesman Det. Donny Moses says the woman used a long kitchen knife in the stabbing.

CBS affiliate WJZ Baltimore reported that the woman got angry, took out a knife and began stabbing her daughter, as told by police.

Detectives and child abuse investigators are continuing to investigate.

Pat Hines, a spokesman for the state Department of Human Resources, says the department is praying that the child will be OK but declined further comment because of an ongoing police investigation.

The building does have metal detectors.
