Indiana boy shot in head by stray bullet during Christmas party

(CBS) GARY, Ind. - A seven-year-old boy that was shot in the head while playing in a Gary, Ind. home during a holiday party is now in critical condition, hospital officials said.

The Chicago Tribune reports that bullets shattered a living room window, hitting the boy and a 36-year-old man early Sunday morning.

Several 911 calls were received around 12:15 a.m. that reported shots fired at a small house, said Gary Police Cpl. Gabrielle King.

Officers arrived to find the living room window shattered by gunfire and the child in the room with a shot wound in the head. He had been playing at the time of the attack.

University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital spokeswoman Lorna Wong said the child is still in the pediatric intensive care unit as of Monday morning.

Bullets also made their way into the kitchen where a 36-year-old man was shot in the groin. He was taken to an unidentified hospital and his condition is stable, said King.

King said the child who was shot in the head was "totally innocent." "He was just trying to have some fun."

King said investigators are unsure if the two victims are related and said they were both visiting the home at the time of the attack.

So far, no arrests have been made.
