The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and conservative-minded organization Freedom’s Watch will be up with dueling radio ads this Independence Day week targeting vulnerable members over the rising price of gasoline.
The DCCC ad features a Bush impersonator “thanking” 13 House Republicans for “continuing to support the Big Oil Energy agenda” with the comedian using a different nickname for each of the targeted members of Congress.
“’preciate you voting to keep giving billions in tax breaks to the big oil companies,” the Bush impersonator says in the ads. “Sure, gasoline is over four bucks a gallon and oil companies are making record profits, but what’s good for Big Oil is good for America, right?”
The majority of the DCCC’s Independence Day ads are against members who are secondary targets for the committee. Most are on the committee’s list of “emerging races” – those with the potential to become competitive, but haven’t achieved that status yet.
A Democratic operative said that the committee’s strategy is to begin raising the negatives for potentially vulnerable Republicans. The targets are: Reps. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.), Charlie Dent (R-Pa.), Thelma Drake (R-Va.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Steve Chabot (R-Ohio), Phil English (R-Pa.), Scott Garrett (R-N.J.), Jim Gerlach (R-Pa.), Virgil Goode (R-Va.), Robin Hayes (R-N.C.). Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) and Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio).
At the same time, the conservative Freedom’s Watch organization, which has been primarily focused on the battle for the House in recent months, is targeting the most vulnerable House Democrats with its own radio ad blitz on gas prices.
