• Birch Evans Bayh III (pronounced "Bye") -- who prefers being called, Evan -- is the son of Birch Evans Bayh, Jr., IndianaÂ's three-term U.S. Senator. His mother, Marvella, was also politically active. They had a great impact on their son. BayhÂ's mother, Marvella, died of cancer in April of 1979.

• Evan Bayh served as IndianaÂ's Governor for eight (8) years. When he was elected in 1988, he was the stateÂ's youngest Governor in the last 100 years at age 33. During his tenure, he resisted raising any major statewide taxes and left Indiana with a $1 Billion budget surplus.

• His "Capital for a Day" program enabled Bayh to travel throughout the state to listen to constituent concerns and get their feedback on proposals. Bayh pledged to revamp and streamline Indiana government; he reorganized all of the stateÂ's health and welfare departments into one agency.

• After graduating from law school and working for two years, Bayh returned to Indiana to work on Wayne TownsendÂ's unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign. After the election season, Bayh went back to the legal world and worked in his fatherÂ's law firm in Indianapolis.

• Bayh is running for the Senate seat his father held for three (3) terms until he was defeated by future Vice President Dan Quayle in 1980.

• BayhÂ's has been called a model of Bill ClintonÂ's New Democrat. In 1996, he delivered the keynote address at th Democratic Convention and has been mentioned as a candidate for higher office nationally. Yet there is still a faction of more liberal Democrats who call him a "Republicrat".
