• Poshard was born in Herald, Illinois and grew up on his familyÂ's farm. He graduated from Carmi High School in 1962.
• He joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and served in the First Cavalry Division in Korea for three years (1962-65). During his time in Korea, he also volunteered to help care for children in a Korean orphanage.
• After his tour of duty in Korea, Poshard attended college on the G.I. Bill. He graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1970.
• After college, Poshard went to work as a high school teacher and coach. He taught history and government from 1970-74 and took graduate classes in his spare time. He earned a masters degree in 1974 and moved from teaching to education administration. For the next decade (1974-84), he worked as assistant director of the Southern Illinois Regional Education Service Center and then became director of the Area Service Center for Educators of the Gifted.
• In 1984, Poshard earned his doctorate in Administration of Higher Education. That same year he was appointed to a seat in the Illinois State Senate, which he had sought unsuccessfully in 1982. He was re-elected the following November and served two full terms.
• Poshard was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1988. He represents the 19th congressional district in southern Illinois. He serves on the Small Business and the Transporttion and Infrastructure Committtees. He was easily re-elected with 67% of the vote in 1996. He has pledged to serve no more than 10 years in Congress.
