Cook, who sang Collective Soul's "The World I Know," U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Dream Big" on the season's finale was criticized by "Idol" judge Simon Cowell who said that Archuleta scored a "knockout" over Cook. Cowell later apologized to Cook, saying that upon reviewing the show he realized the contest was much closer than he had originally thought.
During Season 7 fans learned that Cook was very concerned about his older brother, who is battling brain cancer. Despite his illness, he made the trek to Los Angeles from Indiana to watch his brother perform as a member of the top seven finalists.

Many expected the wholesome Archuleta to win the "Idol" competition. The 17-year-old from Murray, Utah had many stellar moments on the show, including his moving interpretation of John Lennon's "Imagine," but "Idol" voters went for Cook in the end.
