Ice cream truck runs over boy playing on back
ATLANTA - Authorities say a 10-year-old boy has died after being run over by an ice cream truck in Atlanta.
Police said the boy and a 7-year-old boy were playing on the back of the truck Thursday night. Police said the driver asked their parents to get them off the truck, but they remained on it when the driver pulled away.
Witnesses told CBS News affiliate WGCL-TV in Atlanta that one of the children fell from the truck as the driver began pulling out.
"As he was telling them to get off the truck, one fell under the wheel and got run over," Rico Eady told WGCL-TV.
When the driver backed up to see what happened, he struck another child, the police said.
"We heard a lot of screaming and yelling with parents and kids, just a tragic scene," Barbara Redding told WGCL-TV.
Police said in a statement that the older boy was struck by the rear tires of the truck and died.
Authorities say the 7-year-old is in a hospital recovering from a broken leg.
The accident happened on Eloise Court around 9:15 p.m.
Police say the driver will not face any charges.
