Forum: Is Washington overrated?

Butler, a sophomore cornerback, also ran back a fumble recovery 35 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Washington (2-0) won its 13th consecutive home opener and beat the Cougars (1-2) for the fourth consecutive time.

But Huard and Washington's offense was unimpressive after winning a 42-38 shootout at Arizona State in its opener two weeks ago. The Huskies went the final three quarters without a touchdown after Huard teamed with freshman Chris Juergens for a 52-yard TD pass in the opening period.

In the fourth quarter, the Huskies failed to score on four downs after getting to the BYU 2. They ended the game at the Cougars 5.

Huard, a junior who considered entering the NFL draft after his sophomore season, was 16-for-33 for 178 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.

The Huskies led 14-0 at halftime. After Owen Pochman kicked a 23-yard field goal for the Cougars with 2:10 gone in the second half, the 5-foot-9, 160-pound Butler stepped in front of return mate Joe Jarzynka and took Pochman's ensuing kickoff at the 2.

Getting two good blocks from Jarzynka, Butler completed the third-longest kickoff return TD in Washington history and the longest since 1979. That put the Huskies ahead 20-3.

Quarterback Kevin Feterik scored on a 1-yard run for BYU with 4:24 to go in the third quarter.

Juergens, who didn't play in Washington's opener, caught his TD pass at the 32 and outran cornerback Rob Warcup into the end zone to give Washington a 6-0 lead with 55 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Huskies made it 14-0 with 4:07 remaining in the half when Butler ran back a fumble by Ronney Jenkins 35 yards down the left sidelines into the end zone. Derrell Daniels' hit on Jenkins caused the fumble.

After Washington's second touchdown, Huard passed to Ja'Warren Hooker for a 2-point conversion. Huard took a vicious hit from Rob Morris on the play and stayed down for a couple minutes. P>The Huskies held Jenkins, BYU's acclaimed sophomore running back, to 36 yards on 12 carries. Feterik, a junior, was 16-for-33 for 169 yards with no touchdown passes and one interception.
