Hurricane Georges: At A Glance

Hurricane Georges came ashore early Monday morning, making landfall between Biloxi and Pascagoula, Miss.

Here's the latest:

  • The storm is headed inland at about three miles an hour along a north-northwest course.
  • Civil defense officials emphasize that the danger is now from rain and the storm surge. There could be massive flooding from an estimated 15-25 inches of rain associated with the storm. Beach erosion could be severe.
  • All along the Gulf coast, airports and major highways are closed, curfews are in effect, and downed power lines have resulted in blackouts.

  • New Orleans, which only on Sunday seemed to be ground zero as the Georges headed northward, was spared when the storm veered to the east. Tens of thousands spent the night in emergency shelters including the Superdome and New Orleans airport.
  • The stretch from Biloxi, Miss., and Mobile, Ala., on the East, is expected to be the worst hit.
  • In Gautier, Miss., Georges ripped the roof off a community college gym where more than 400 people were spending the night. No one was reported hurt, however. Reports of roofs ripped off other buildings were too numerous to count.
  • In the Carribean, 200 people were dead, hundreds still missing, and 100,000 were left homeless on the island of the Dominican Republic.
In all, Georges has left more than 300 dead in the Carribean, where emergency efforts were under way.
