Hull's OT Goal Downs Coyotes

The Dallas Stars worked overtime to keep their unbeaten streak alive.

Mike Modano scored a power-play goal and assisted on Brett Hull's game-winner 37 seconds into overtime as the Stars beat the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 Friday night to extend their unbeaten streak to 14 games.

"We know it's something that's going to come to an end. Right now we're just enjoying it and having fun," said Modano, who jumped over a sliding Keith Carney and slid the puck to Hull in front of the net for the winning goal.

Forum: Will the Stars go all the way this season?

  • The Stars are 11-0-3 since Dec. 4, matching the Coyotes 14-game unbeaten streak from Oct. 25 to Dec. 2. The Stars also are 7-0-2 in their last nine road games.

The first-place stars opened an eight-point lead over the second-place Coyotes in the Pacific Division.

"It's just another loss," Phoenix coach Jim Schoenfeld said.

Deron Quint scored his first goal of the season with 32.6 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.

"We played according to the plan that we had and we let it slip away in overtime," Schoenfeld said. "You don't get any marks for effort. You get marks for results and we let this one slip away."

The Coyotes played their second straight game without their top line of Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick and Dallas Drake. Tkachuk and Roenick, Phoenix's leading scorers, were injure Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings and Drake was suspended for his hit from behind on Doug Bodger in the same game.

"You're going against the best team in the league while you're missing your big guns and you still have a chance to win," Quint said. "There's no question we were in there and we gave them a little scare."

Modano's goal capped a three-on-two break 27 seconds after Mike Stapleton was whistled for obstruction-holding. Jere Lehtinen carried the puck down the left side into the Coyotes zone and slid a pass to Modano in the right faceoff circle.

Modano, the Stars' leading scorer, fired a shot over Nikolai Khabibulin's outstretched glove into the top right corner of the net for his 12th goal of the season.

"We're thinking about checking and thinking about doing good things with the puck," Modano said. "The offense will take care of itself."

The best scoring chance of the first two periods came with 5:25 left in the second when Hull tried to stuff a wraparound shot into the left corner of the net. Nikolai Khabibulin trapped the puck under his right leg, although he wasn't certain of the save until he had looked over both shoulders and between his pads.
