Hugh Delehanty: Help For Older Workers

We all know the news for jobseekers is tough right now. Over the past year, record numbers of employees have gotten pink slips, but some are managing to bounce back, says Hugh Delehanty of AARP.

AARP The Magazine's feature story entitled "Laid Off!" (March/April 2009 issue) profiles some of their most inspiring stories.

Here's the other ways you will find help on AARP The Magazine's Web site:

  • It has job-related resources, such as one-minute recareering video workshops and tips on ways to switch careers at midlife from Samuel Greengard, author of the book, "AARP Crash Course in Finding the Work You Love, The Essential Guide to Reinventing Your Life."
  • Since typical responses to any kind of job loss are worrisome questions about paying bills and fear of finding another job, you'll also read AARP's suggestions for navigating through the confusing questions you may face. For example, how will you maintain health insurance for you and your family? What protections do you have under the federal Health Insurance Portability Act (HIPPA) and federal COBRA laws? What do terms like "laid off" and "displaced" really mean, and how can differences in their meaning affect your eligibility for various assistance programs, such as unemployment benefits and training
  • Finally, you will see AARP's job tips for 50+ workers, offering help with everything from writing an effective resume to career planning.
