"How I Met Your Mother" gives glimpse of the "mother"

There have been a lot of suspenseful misses over the past eight years on "How I Met Your Mother" -- with countless guest stars and many "almost" loves for Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), who was at one point very close to walking down the aisle.

But -- finally -- on Monday night, viewers caught a glimpse of the actress who will play the "mother" and Ted's future bride: Cristin Milioti, right now known only as the "Woman with Umbrella."

So who is she? Milioti starred in the Tony Award-winning musical "Once," where she not only showed off her singing skills, but also her comedic talent. The New Jersey native has made plenty of appearances on the small screen: "30 Rock," "The Sopranos," "Nurse Jackie" and "The Good Wife." She's also set to appear in Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street," starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey.

In Monday's episode, Ted says he's giving up on New York City's dating scene. He tells Lily (Alyson Hannigan) that he's moving to Chicago the day after Barney and Robin (Cobie Smulders) tie the knot. His plane ticket is booked. Maybe he'll find love there, he says. Truth be told, many a single New Yorker has probably felt this way from time to time. It was a poignant part in the episode, as viewers watch Ted admit how difficult it will be to see one of his best friends marry the woman he loves. With Lily and Marshall (Jason Segel) moving to Italy, it's even more of reason for him to leave town.

But as the "Something New" episode unfolds, and the gang packs their bags to head to "Farhampton" for Barney and Robin's big day, we piece together that Chicago may not be in Ted's future. The Woman with the Umbrella is at the counter, buying a ticket for a train on the Long Island Railroad; she's also heading to the wedding -- guitar and yellow umbrella in hand. She's wearing brown boots, one of the evening's foreshadows. Earlier, Lily told Ted she imagines him meeting a woman with great boots that she can borrow.

CBS' series has been renewed for a ninth and final season in 2013-14. We'll have to wait until then to find out how Ted and the mystery girl meet.
