House Will Vote On Stimulus Friday
4793123 The House of Representatives will vote on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Friday, an aide to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi tells CBS News' Jill Jackson. The legislation will also head to the Senate for a full vote before moving to President Obama's desk for signing. It is not yet clear which legislative body will vote first.
With surprising speed, Senate leaders announced Wednesday afternoon that a compromise had been reached on the shape of the bill. House and Senate representatives met in conference to hash out the differences between the differing versions of the bill passed by each chamber.
The timing of tomorrow's vote hinges on how quickly Congressional staff write the legislation. CBS News' John Nolen notes that when the Senate reached a compromise on a final version of its bill on Friday, February 6th, it took staff almost twenty-four hours to draft and file the bill.
Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), one of three Republican senators who supported the initial legislation, said Wednesday that the bill agreed upon in conference will cost $789 billion dollars.
