House Will Adjourn Early As Hurricane Threatens Texas

The House will adjourn early Thursday afternoon in order to give members from Texas time to return home to prepare for Hurricane Ike, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced.

According to the latest projections, Ike is expected to slam into the Gulf coast of Texas early Saturday morning and could be a Category 4 storm when it makes landfall.

Aides to Hoyer said they expected to finish for the day around 3 p.m.

The delay does give Democrats time to finish work on a comprehensive energy bill expected to hit the House floor early next week. House Democrats were scheduled to meet at 12:15 p.m. to finalize details of the package.
