House Republicans Vote To Oppose Senate Immigration Bill

House Republicans approved a symbolic measure opposing the Senate's immigration bill Tuesday evening with 114 members voting to support it and only 23 members opposing it.

The vote deals a major blow to White House hopes of passing a comprehensive immigration overhaul because Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has asked the president to corral 70 Republican votes before she would bring the measure to the floor.

"Our members spoke strongly in opposition to the Senate bill," Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said after the vote. "It was not a surprise to those of us who have been talking to our members about the issue."

The measure was intended to throw up another roadblock for backers of the Senate measure during the same week lawmakers in that chamber consider the reform bill.
