House Judiciary Postpones Vote On Goodling

House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) is postponing a vote Wednesday to grant a former top Justice Department official immunity from further prosecution to compel her to testify before the panel in the ongoing investigation surrounding eight fired federal prosecutors.

Conyers postponed the vote to grant Monica Goodling immunity by a week at the request of Texas Rep. Lamar Smith, the ranking Republican on his committee.

Goodling was Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's top liaison to the White House during the discussions to fire the U.S. attorneys.

“It is my hope that a short delay, agreed to in the spirit of bipartisan cooperation, will enable the Minority to join us in taking this critical step in our efforts to uncover the truth about why the U.S. attorneys were terminated and what it means for the integrity of federal law enforcement,” Conyers said. “I continue to believe that Ms. Goodling would be a key witness in our investigation."
