Hollywood Dating Scorecard Twists

It's been quite a year for celebrity love lives.

There have been some shocking splits with Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, and Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, among others, going their separate ways.

Hollywood has also seen a number of unlikely pairings emerge, including Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Vince Vaughn and Aniston, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

The Early Show entertainment contributor Jess Cagle

on the latest grist from the gossip mill Monday.

Cagle, a senior editor of People magazine, told co-anchor Rene Syler the biggest news is Pitt filing to adopt Jolie's two children, Maddox and Zahara.

"It is a sign that things are very serious between them," Cagle told Syler. "I was so surprised by this, but now I wouldn't be surprised by anything. Maybe they are planning a marriage pretty soon.

"I think it has a lot to do with security for the children. I think the children are very, very important to her. And it sends a message to them and the rest of the world that they're very serious about this. And they're both taking care of them."

Cagle admits he was far off the mark about Pitt in an appearance on The Early Show about a year ago.

"I was on the show and we had photos of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston on vacation in the Caribbean. It's like everything is fine.

"Then, just a month later, I think just to hurt me," he kidded, "they broke up."

Cagle says it's true that Aniston and Vaughn spent Thanksgiving together and, "They've been seen out together a lot. It is for real. They're dating. And they're not out talking about it and all of that stuff. But they seem to be having a good time.

"Is it forever? I don't know. But he's a fun guy and she needed a little fun. It's been a hard year (for Aniston). He's a very, very funny guy and they do seem to be having a great time."

Cagle notes he's not surprised that Kidman and Urban, who both hail from Australia, are an item — even though she's a Tinsel town staple and he's a country music star.

"There's so much fluidity in the entertainment world these days that everybody seems to mix a lot," he says. "Also, she loves music. She sang in 'Moulin Rouge.' She dated Lenny Kravitz a little while. She likes musicians. They're both 38. And they're both kind of — fair."

Photos in People magazine recently show Urban patting Kidman's belly.

"That's a big gasp!" Cagle says. "She was wearing a ring. And he was touching her belly. I think if they announce that they were engaged, I wouldn't be surprised.

"They did spend Thanksgiving in Nashville. Her parents were there with his whole family. That's a big thing. You fly the parents in to spend Thanksgiving with him, so that's a big deal. It looks like it's serious.

"Again, they're being very quiet about it. This is the new trend in Hollywood. You don't even acknowledge that you're dating somebody."

Does his patting her belly mean she's pregnant?

"If it does mean anything," Cagle says, "I think it's kind of early — and maybe too early — to talk about it. Maybe they'll have an announcement soon or maybe he may have been doing that just to mess with us."
