Hillary Set To Rock In N.Y.
Hillary Clinton has all but decided to run for a soon-to-be-vacant U.S. Senate seat in New York. Friends say the discussions are now about how to run and not whether to run, CBS News Political Analyst Gloria Borger reports.
She's going to announce an exploratory committee in mid-summer to raise the $15-$20 million she needs to run against New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani, her likely Republican opponent.
Her friends say the big professional hurdle is figuring out how to perform as first lady while spending an awful lot of time in Albany and Buffalo. After all, no first lady has ever used that job to run for high public office.
The personal side is easier. Friends say Hillary Clinton understands that when she's no longer first lady, her bully pulpit disappears. And since she's already decided to devote the next five to 10 years to public service, the Senate gives her the political structure she needs to be effective.
The family is all for it, but there are some questions that friends ask: If the race goes down to the wire, can Mrs. Clinton - who's been sheltered from the press - take the heat? And if she loses, does she have the strength to move on - one more time.
