Speaking at a global development event in Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said today that President Obama expects to win re-election -- and then plans to be "done."

"Too many people who rhetorically pledge themselves to democracy believe in one election one time. And too many leaders don't have any willingness to transfer power," Clinton said at the opening of the Global Diaspora Forum. The three-day event is aimed at helping leaders from diaspora communities -- those including resettled people -- within the U.S. work on projects related to development and diplomacy with their countries of origin.

"President Obama and I laugh a lot because we deal with these leaders who've been there for 10, 20, 30, 40 years, and he and I look at each other and say 'Oh my gosh can you imagine?'" she continued. "The president said to me the other day, 'I'm going to win re-election and then I'm done.'"

Clinton was making the case that there are several countries poised for democratic transitions of power, and that leaders in diaspora communities in America can help leaders in places like the Middle East and Africa learn the political skills necessary to make it happen.

"We believe strongly that if there is not vigorous political involvement, a lot of these movements will be hijacked," she said.

Recent former U.S. presidents, such as Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, have stayed out of politics after leaving office but have remained relevant by leading humanitarian and non-profit initiatives, such as earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
