High Winds Flip Over Small Planes at NJ Airport
Thousands of customers in the East are without power after high winds overnight that were strong enough to flip over small planes parked at an airport.
The fast-moving thunderstorms blew through New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey early Tuesday and knocked out electricity to around 60,000 people.
A gust of 55 mph damaged seven planes and a hangar at Trenton-Mercer Airport in Ewing, N.J. Mercer County spokeswoman Julie Willmot says at least two flipped over.
Officials in Dallastown, Pa., blamed a lightning strike for a gas line fire at a substation across from an elementary school. The winds also toppled trees in suburban Philadelphia.
A Walmart store in Charles Town, W.Va., was significantly damaged as the storm knocked over trees and destroyed shopping cart kiosks.
No injuries were reported from the storms.
