Henman, Ivanisevic Advance At Qatar


Top seed Tim Henman advanced to the second round of the $1 million Qatar Open Monday after defeating Dutchman Sjeng Schalken 6-2, 6-3 in the opening day of the tournament.

The Briton, playing his traditional serve-and-volley game, encountered little resistance from Schalken.

"For the first of the season, my game was fine," Henman said. "I didn't make enough first serves, but I was happy with my game at the back of the court."

Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic, seeded fourth, needed over two hours to beat Francisco Clavet of Spain 6-3, 6-7 (1-6), 6-4.

American Jeff Tarango also advanced to the second round after defeating eighth seed Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-3.

Tarango won comfortably. needing just 26 minutes for the first set and one hour for the match.

"Jan is easily one of the best serve and volley players in the game and I decided I was going to pass and lob over him to create a kind of confusion and it seemed to work," Tarango said.

Earlier, Czech Petr Korda, who tested positive for taking drugs at Wimbledon last year, reiterated his innocence.

"My record has been and is still clean and will remain so," he said. "I was tested nine times last year. I don't have any knowledge of what happened," the defending Qatar Open champion said.
