Heavy Rains Kill 228 In Pakistan

The death toll from heavy rains and thunderstorms that have lashed Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi has increased to 228, an official said Sunday.

The casualty figures from Saturday's storms rose after 185 more bodies were counted in the city morgue, said Sardar Ahmed, minister of health for Sindh province of which Karachi is the capital. The initial number of those killed had been reported as 43.

At least twenty were killed in separate incidents of electrocution. Eighteen more died when their mud houses were destroyed.

Karachi's mayor reports power outages from yesterday's storms have led to street protests by people with no way to run fans or air conditioners in the sweltering summertime heat.

A relief camp has been set up in an outlying town to provide food, medicine and shelter for people who've lost their homes.
