Heart patient, 5, kidnapped from St. Louis hospital while on transplant list, police say
(CBS/AP) ST. LOUIS - St. Louis police have issued arrest warrants for the father and paternal grandmother of 5-year-old Porter Stone, who they say was taken from a hospital where he was on a transplant waiting list.
Police Wednesday said the boy was found safe, and there are warrants out for 33-year-old Jeffery Stone and his mother, Rhonda Marie Matthews, for kidnapping, interfering with custody and endangering the welfare of a child.
Authorities accuse Stone of abducting his son from St. Louis Children's Hospital on Tuesday. The hospital warned that Porter only had about a day's worth of medication left in a portable IV when taken.
St. Louis police say Illinois State Police found the boy, his father and grandmother in Alsip, near Chicago, early Wednesday and that Porter seemed fine but was taken to a hospital.
Doctors told CBS affiliate KMOV that Porter suffers from cardiomyopathy or a weakening of the heart muscle, a condition he was diagnosed with only six months ago. He is reportedly next in line to receive a heart transplant.
According to the station, police said Porter's father did not have legal custody of him after the state of Texas gave the boy's mother sole custody during their legal separation. Porter's parents are going through a divorce.
