Heading Home
>>> There's been another deadly accident in the waters off greece. Over the weekend, a yacht carrying 38 people mostly americans sank in the aegean sea. That was after hitting a low-lying rock. It was caught on video and an 82-year-old american man died of an apparent heart attack. The yacht sank in 20 minutes, one person said. >>> among them two americans survived deal that happened last week. Tom fenton has their story.
>> reporter: christine shannon and heidi hart were among the survivors. We met them in amsterdam on their way home to seattle and told us how sheer luck, common sense and the intent to survive kept them alive when the ship hit the rock.
>> when they noticed we were going to hit the rock, they tried to turn and then it came into view for both of us. It hit and it was probably 20 to 30 feet from where we were sitting. >> we saw the panic and we knew we didn't have much time. We saw everybody going to the back, and we went to the front. We went the opposite way.
>> reporter: people were jumping in the water? >> yes, they were throwing their children off of the back of the boat to people in the water. >> we've since heard stories that people were fighting children for their life jackets. I mean, it was just chaos.
>> reporter: where was the crew? >> i don't know. I never saw the crew. >> reporter: the captain says he was the last to leave the ship. >> there's still people on the ship. He was not the last to leave the ship.
>> reporter: there were also reports that the bridge wasn't fully manned when this happened.
We were surprised to find out that there was over 50 crewmen on that, and we were just like, where were they? I didn't see any.
>> reporter: you must have thought at one point that you might not make it.
>> i thought the whole time we wouldn't make it. I thought this was going to be the fight of our life. That we needed something to pull us through, because i mean, the boat was going down. It was going down fast and the chaos, there weren't enough life vests. Man i helped pull out of the water, he didn't have a life preserver on. He floated up and held his hand until someone else helped me pull him out of the water. He was wearing underwear and had been out there probably 35 minutes. >> i mean, we were lucky. It sinks in more and more every day how lucky we are. >> i can't wait to get home and see my family.
>> reporter: two american women, just glad to be alive. Tom fenton, cbs news, amsterdam. >> and that is the news this morning. >> now, here's mark with another check of the weather.
