Hastert Makes Official Retirement Announcement
As everyone has reported all week, including The Crypt, former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) made it official today and formally announced his retirement from the House.
Confirming all the speculation of recent days, said he has "decided not to seek another term in Congress."
Like he had throughout his eight years as speaker, Hastert kept it simple and short in a speech to supporters at the Kendall County in Yorkville, Ill. He thanked them for all their efforts on his behalf over the last two decades -- and only mentioned the name of one former aide, Scott Palmer, his ex-chief of staff.
"Who would have thought that a wrestling coach from Kendall County, Ill., would be the longest-serving Republican speaker in our nation's history?" Hastert asked. "Together we have made a difference, we have made history, and I thank you."
