Hasek Placed On Inj. Reserve

Dominik Hasek was placed on the injured reserve list Friday, and will miss at least one week with a strained ligament under his left kneecap.

To fill his spot, the Sabres acquired Peter Skudra off waivers from Boston to back up rookie Mika Noronen. Noronen earned a win in his NHL debut after Hasek was injured in the first period of Buffalo's season-opening 4-2 victory over Chicago on Thursday night.

With regular backup Martin Biron an unsigned restricted free agent, and the Sabres having no other proven goalie in their system, the team was forced to pick up Skudra as insurance.

Sabres spokesman Gregg Huller said Hasek's condition has not worsened, and that he will likely be activated after spending the required seven days retroactive to Thursday on injured reserve.

After playing host to Los Angeles on Saturday, the Sabres don't play again until they open a three-game road trip Oct. 13 in Edmonton.

Hasek said his knee felt the same on Friday as it did the previous night after Chicago's Tony Amonte was pushed onto him during a scramble in the crease.

"I still don't feel like I can play and I won't play tomorrow for sure. That's all I know right now," Hasek said. "I'll be evaluated by the doctor. I'll see what he's going to say."

As for being ready to play next week, he said: "That's my hope. I want to be ready for the first road game."

The Sabres went 17-19-4 when Hasek, a five-time Vezina Trophy-winner, missed 40 games last season with a groin injury.

Skudra has appeared in 74 games over parts of the last three seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, posting a 26-22-11 record with a 2.65 goals-against average. The Bruins had just signed Skudra an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday to a one-year contract to back up Byron Dafoe after John Grahame broke his ankle in an off-ice accident.
