(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - Harlem girls basketball star Tayshana Murphy was found fatally shot in the head inside her Manhattan apartment building in a case of mistaken identity, according to reports.

Police responded to a 911 report of a shooting at 4:14 a.m. Sunday at the Grant Houses in Harlem. They found the 18-year-old Murphy with a gunshot wound to the head.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nicknamed "Chicken," Murphy was one of the top girls basketball players in New York City. She was a senior at Murry Bergtraum High School for Business Careers and her family told the New York Daily News that several colleges were actively recruiting her.

Witnesses said Murphy was trying to outrun a gunman in a fourth floor hallway when she was shot.

A source told the New York Post that the gunman apparently mistook her for a male rival due to her athletic build. Murphy was reportedly wearing a hoodie during the time of the shooting.

There were no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
