Hamilton Likes Gates As Obama's Defense Secretary

Former Democratic congressman — and 9/11 Commission and Iraq Study Group co-chairman — Lee Hamilton mused Friday that Robert Gates would be an "obvious choice" for Obama to pick as his secretary of defense.

"I think he's been well-received as defense secretary," Hamilton told Politico. "A holdover at that position for a period of time would be desirable, so I'm personally favorable to it."

But Hamilton said that Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.), whose name has also been bandied about for a possible Cabinet position in the new administration, would most benefit Obama as ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "Obama should leave him where he is," said Hamilton. "Where he is is a crucially important position."
