Hadiya Pendleton Murder: $11,000 reward offered in death of Chicago teen who performed at Obama inauguration, report says

(CBS/AP) Authorities said Wednesday that the death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton appears to be a case of mistaken identity involving gangs, offering an $11,000 reward for information leading to the killer's capture, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Hadiya died Tuesday afternoon at a Chicago park about a mile from President Barack Obama's home on Chicago's South Side. Last week, she performed at events in Washington for Obama's inauguration.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said at a news conference Wednesday that the gunman apparently belongs to a gang who considered the park as their territory. McCarthy said the gunman may have believed Hadiya and her group to be members of a rival gang.

But police said Hadiya had no arrest record and there were no indications that anyone in the group was gang-affiliated.

"These were good kids by everything that I learned," McCarthy said at the news conference. "Wrong place at the wrong time."

McCarthy announced there was a reward of $11,000 for information leading to the killer's capture and conviction. He said the shooter was last seen fleeing in a white Nissan.
