'Guiding Light' To Give Back
The longest-running show in broadcast history, the CBS soap opera "Guiding Light," is nearing its 70th birthday, and plans a unique project to mark it.
"Light" will team with the volunteer group Hands On Network in a year-long effort to encourage volunteerism across the country.
Beginning next month with a visit to the region devastated by Hurricane Katrina, where "Light" cast and crew members will help to rebuild some homes and take part in other volunteer activities, "Light" will visit a different city each month to exhort community members to volunteer.
On The Early Show Thursday, "Light" star Ricky Paull Goldin, who plays FBI agent Gus Aitoro, told co-anchor Rene Syler, "We want the fans to come out and join us, stand by our side, and we're going to capture a lot of it live on camera."
"The show is created by Irna Phillips in 1937," he said. "The theme of the show was the brotherhood of man, and what you can give to the world. And fans have let us into their homes for 70 years. And this is our way of giving back."
