Gruesome Find In Texas

Police found the bodies of a decapitated 1-year-old boy and two other children in a small apartment in Brownsville, Texas. The mother and the father of the youngest were arrested.

The 1-year-old boy was found on a bed in the one-bedroom apartment Tuesday night. Police Chief Carlos Garcia said he didn't know the condition of the bodies of the other children, which were in a plastic bag beside the bed, and didn't give their genders.

Angela Camacho, 23, is charged with three counts of capital murder. Also arraigned on three counts of capital murder was 22-year-old John Allen Rubio. Both remain in jail without bond.

Brownsville police Lieutenant Henry Etheridge says Rubio is Camacho's common-law husband and father of her youngest child.

Garcia said he didn't know whether the children, who were 5 years old or younger, were killed in the apartment or somewhere else, but he described a bloody, messy scene inside the apartment.

"They live in very poor conditions. There's clothes, trash, all sorts of things thrown all over," he said. "Very poor, very trashy ... in the worst conditions that anyone could live in in the United States."

About 200 to 300 people gathered to watch from behind crime-scene tape as a mobile crime lab unit arrived and investigators wearing gloves moved into the apartment.

"It tears my heart. I want to cry. How can people do this?" said Nancy Garcia, 46, who lives nearby and said she grew up in the neighborhood. "There's help out there."

Juan Hernandez, 39, said he and other neighbors had called police repeatedly about fights and beatings he heard coming from the apartment.

Garcia said a couple, acquaintances of the parents, who walked into the apartment and found the bloody scene flagged down passing police officers.

Brownsville is on the Mexican border about 230 miles south of San Antonio.
