Greenwich, Conn. woman, 73, arrested in car vandalism spree

(CBS) GREENWICH, Conn. - Janina Slomiana, a 73-year-old Greenwich, Conn. woman, was arrested Sunday for allegedly vandalizing at least a half a dozen cars in her neighborhood earlier in the day, CBS New York reports.

"It makes no sense to me," Greenwich Police Lt. Kraig Gray told the station.

Police suspect Slomiana used "some sort of metal screw or chunk of metal" to scratch the cars but it is unclear why.

The 73-year-old was arrested after a neighbor allegedly saw her in the act.

"A good citizen of the neighborhood was out and observed her acting suspiciously around, approached and realized she had just been engaged in vandalizing a car," Lt. Gray said.

Police say the woman, who has lived in Greenwich for decades, lives alone and takes walks every day, giving her the opportunity to do the deed.

Slomiana was arrested on six counts of criminal mischief, a felony.

When CBS New York approached Slomiana outside of her home and asked if she committed the alleged crimes, she said "no," before ducking into her house.

Police said they're trying to determine whether 20 other car vandalism cases reported over the summer may be linked to Slomiana.

She is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court Sept. 16.
