(CBS)  GLENDALE, Calif. - Thieves in a Los Angeles suburb made off with a bag containing the ashes of a family matriarch, and relatives say they're desperate for the remains to be returned, CBS Los Angeles reported.

"It's really painful. I just want her back. I just want the ashes back," said Lily Legino, daughter-in-law of the deceased.

The thieves took a purple velvet bag, containing an urn and the ashes, while they were ransacking the Legino family's minivan that was left unlocked outside their home in Glendale.

According to CBS Los Angeles, the bag had been in the vehicle for three days.

"We were getting ready to do a ceremony. I had just picked up the ashes," Lily Legino said.

"I hope they have some sort of heart and they [leave] the package somewhere where we can reclaim it," said son-in-law Steve Legino. "We want her back so we can put her to rest."
