Grandma Around The World In 99 Days
It was a little history touching down on the tarmac in the countryside south of London as grandmother Jennifer Murray landed her helicopter. As CBS News Correspondent Richard Roth reports, the 60-year-old American-born Englishwoman has just become the first woman to fly a helicopter around the world alone.
Around the world in 99 days, she flew.
Murray didn't rush because she wasn't trying to set a time record.
"It wasn't about time. It was about being the first, because we didn't have a time to beat. It hasn't been done before," said Murray, a mother of three and a grandmother.
While she flew alone, Murray wasn't unaccompanied. Tagging along, and setting his own record aboard a microlight plane, was pilot Colin Vodil. A support crew followed them as they flew more than 22,000 miles over 30 countries.
"I found myself laughing with the sheer joy you feel [being] at one with nature and with the gods," said Murray.
The pilots raised about $1 million for charity, but Murray says don't praise her because she's a grandmother. She doesn't want her accomplishment diminished.
"In a way it doesn't portray what I'm doing, because in a way, it's saying,'hey, this is something grandmas can do.'"
And now Murray, a housewife with comfortable homes in England, France and Hong Kong, plans to rest for a while, but not for long.
For her next adventure, she plans to fly with her husband, who encouraged her six years ago to become a pilot. Won't it feel crowded with a companion in the cabin?
"It will be a pleasant crowd," Murray said.
Her husband responded by giving her a kiss.
