Gore Gored In GOP TV Ad

The Republican Leadership Council plans to air a television commercial poking fun at Vice President Al Gore. The ad targets some of Gore's verbal gaffes, CBS News Associate Producer Kathy Mountcastle reports.

The ad will air on broadcast and cable in the San Francisco and Washington D.C. media markets and nationally on CNN. Gore is the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2000.

Here's the text of the GOP commercial:

Gore: I took the initiative in creating the Internet.

Announcer: Reality check. The Internet was created in 1969 by the Pentagon.

Gore said, "I lived on a farm. My father taught me how to take up hay all day long in the hot sun."

Well, not quite. Gore grew up in the top floor suite of a luxury hotel in Washington D.C.

Gore also said, "I undertook the task to reinvent the federal government."

Yeah right. Earth to Gore. Stop trying to reinvent reality.

Gore's campaign organization dismissed the commercial as a "phony Republican attack ad."

"No half-baked attack ad by the Republicans will hide the fact that they are offering no vision for America's future," the Gore campaign said in a statement.

The Republican Leadership Council promotes a moderate GOP agenda. It is modeled after the Democratic Leadership Council.
