Goodling On Domenici And Iglesias
In Monica Goodling's testimony today, there was an interesting exchange regarding Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) and his efforts to force out David Iglesias as the U.S. attorney in New Mexico.
Goodling said she attended a Justice Dept. meeting prior to Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty's private briefing for the Senate Judiciary Committee on the prosecutor purge. During that meeting, which she said took place before Feb. 12, Goodling was taking notes, and Domenici's efforts to fire Iglesias were raised. Domenici complained that Iglesias "didn't move cases." But then an unknown DOJ official in the room said. "No, we don't want to say that." Goodling said the meeting included McNulty, Kyle Sampson, former chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Michael Elston, McNulty's chief of staff, and possibly William Moschella, another high-ranking DOJ official.
