Good Samaritan stops Ga. robbery, but his 2-year-old son gets shot
(CBS/AP) STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Police say a gunman wounded a 2-year-old boy Wednesday after the boy's father disrupted a robbery attempt by the same gunman at a nearby bank.
The child is reportedly in stable condition at an Atlanta-area hospital.
According to CBS Atlanta, the Good Samaritan intervened to prevent a mugging at the bank. Moments later, the same man and the robbery suspect ended up in front of a Kroger supermarket in Stone Mountain, with the dad in a car. The suspect allegedly fired between eight and 10 shots into the vehicle, one of which wounded the man's 2-year-old son.
DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander said, "This is just a very good man who was trying to help someone else." He told CBS Atlanta, "We're going to do everything we can to support him, and we're going to find the person or persons responsible for this."
Witnesses told police the boy was carried into the supermarket and placed on a checkout counter where a pharmacist offered first aid until an ambulance arrived. The shooter fled.
The boy was in stable condition Wednesday at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
Authorities said they were hopeful a surveillance system recorded clear footage of the gunman.
