Gmail get a new look, similarities to Google+

(CBS) - Google's Jason Cornwell announced on the Gmail blog yesterday that the popular email service will be getting a redesign. He said, "we're embarking on a series of interface updates to help strip out unnecessary clutter and make Gmail as beautiful as it is powerful."

Users may have already noticed the changes on the Google homepage, Calendar and Maps. The change is part of a company-wide initiative to improve the design and experience of all their products.

From the screenshots posted on the blog, it looks like the default blues will be replaced with gray or black, with more white space between subject lines and buttons. Also missing is the line of advertising space between the navigation buttons and inbox.

The search engine giant was already in the news this week because of their latest offering, Google+, which is probably the best social networking product that the company has introduced, according to many tech experts.

Whether or not their new social network inspired the company-wide redesign is up for speculation. Ultimately, what matters is that the new look is modern and sleek.
