Gmail Tip: Turn Off Conversation View!

I don't normally use exclamation points in my headlines, but this is perhaps the best Gmail news I've seen all year. If you hate, hate, hate Gmail's message threading (a.k.a. Conversation View) like I do, you'll be ecstatic to know you finally have the option of turning it off.

Message threading, of course, is Gmail's method of grouping together e-mails with the same subject. I've always found it awkward, confusing, and annoying -- though I'm sure some folks feel just the opposite. (Hey, some people actually like vanilla ice cream, so go figure.)

Anyway, if you're ready to send Conversation View back to hell, here's how:

  1. Sign into your Gmail account.
  2. Click the Settings link in the upper-right corner.
  3. In the General tab, scroll down until you see Conversation View, then set it to off.
  4. Scroll all the way to the bottom and click Save Changes.
Woo-hoo! Now your messages will appear one after the other, individually, the way the gods intended.

Agree? Disagree? Hit the comments to mount your defense of Conversation View -- or celebrate its demise. [via The Official Gmail Blog]
