Giuliani Calls On Young Voters

(CBS)
From CBS News' Ryan Corsaro:

MIAMI BEACH, FLA. -- Rudy Giuliani says it's just a matter of getting people out the door and into the booths to win today's Florida GOP primary.

"We have the votes, we have the votes to win…they're at home," shouted Giuliani. "We have to get them out to the polls!"

Last night, on the eve of the primary, Giuliani told a roaring crowd of hundreds of Florida International University students that he needs their vote.

"We've been campaigning in Florida, it seems like months, and I feel like I'm one of you."

Stressing the importance of keeping the United States safe from terrorism, Giuliani said energy independence would silence the current administration's enemies.

"People like Ahmedinejad and Chavez would have very little to say," said Giuliani.

Giuliani got an unintentional laugh when mentioning his vision for the space program, which he pledges to expand.

"We're gonna put someone on Mars before anyone else does…" said Rudy, to laughs from some of the crowd.

"No, no, no! That is a serious promise!" he insisted.

Rousing the spirit of the crowd's Cuban Americans, Giuliani stood with Gov. Rick Perry, R-Tex., and actor Jon Voight, saying he would like to rid the country of Fidel Castro and communism.

"I hope if I become president, we will be able to go to Cuba," he said as supporters went silent.

"We'll go to a Cuba in which the power is not passed from one brother to another, but from people in elections!"

Giuliani's poll numbers continue to slip not only in this state, but in states that come after it, including his home state of New York.

But the campaign is banking, both financially and politically, that a strong showing with aid from early voting in Florida will give Giuliani a boost to continue the election race.
