It was the first time the world has seen Zimmerman since he went into hiding shortly after he shot and killed Martin as the teen walked through the Retreat at Twin Lakes community more than one month ago.

He spoke only the words "Yes, sir" when asked questions about the charges. After the hearing, his attorney, Mark O'Mara, said that the Seminole County sheriff had already put Zimmerman in protective custody.

The judge set an arraignment date for May 29 at 1:30 p.m.

O'Mara, requested that the judge seal court papers associated with the case. The judge granted his request after prosecutors made no objection. The judge said he would allow the probable cause affidavit to remain public.

Zimmerman turned himself in to the Seminole County Jail Wednesday and was booked at approximately 8:30 p.m. on second-degree murder charges.

The hearing was attended by special prosecutor and state attorney Angela Corey.
