(CBS) It's over between George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis.

"We are not together anymore. It's very difficult and very personal and we hope everyone can respect our privacy," the couple said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

The actor and the Italian actress/model were together for two years.

Clooney, who turned 50 last month, and Canalis, 32, were spotted just last week having dinner together in Italy, People magazine reports. The pair made their public debut in September 2009 at the Venice Film Festival.

Back in January, the actor said on "Piers Morgan Tonight" that he'd never get married again (he and actress Talia Balsam were married from 1989-1993).

I was married, so I gave it a shot," Clooney said at the time. "I've proven how good I was at it, and I just...I'm allowed one."

Canalis seemed more inclined towards marriage in a recent interview with Italian magazine Che.

"I am a firm believer in marriage," she said in the magazine's June issue, according to Us Weekly. "In the future I will be married, but for the time being I am happy as I am. I don't need anything to confirm how happy I am."

"I am very happy at the moment - thanks to my man and my fairytale is continuing," she added in the interview. "We are a couple that never gets bored."
