Friends: Slain pregnant woman was targeted in NY shooting

BAY SHORE, N.Y. - Friends of a pregnant woman fatally shot outside her Long Island home say she may have been targeted by an enemy of her husband, reports CBS New York.

Police responding to reports of gunfire at a residence in Bay Shore, N.Y., on Saturday night found 31-year-old Milagro Canjura shot multiple times inside her car, according to the station. The victim was rushed to Southside Hospital, where she and her unborn daughter were pronounced dead. Canjura was six months pregnant.

The station reports there is speculation among those close to Canjura regarding why anyone would want to harm her. One friend, who did not wish to be identified, said Canjura - a telephone technician whose husband is currently in jail - may have been the target of an act of vengeance against her spouse.

"She had to pay for something that... for other people, and that's what happened to her," the woman told CBS New York. "You just don't do that to a pregnant woman."

The details of why the victim's husband is behind bars were not reported.

Neighbors told the station there had recently been a drive-by shooting at the same home three weeks ago.

Canjura's landlord, who heard the gunfire coming from her driveway, also said the woman should not have had to pay for something her husband may have done to someone else. She told the station Canjura had just picked up the mail and was reading a letter from her husband in her car when she was killed.

Friends who visited the site of the shooting to pay their respects told CBS New York that Canjura had lost two previous pregnancies, including twins.

Suffolk Police are asking the public to come forward with any information that could lead to an arrest in the case.
