(CBS) -- Actor Steve Carell and the small-town Texas drama "Friday Night Lights" both scored some nice farewell gifts from the Emmy voters.

"FNL," which is ending its five-season run tomorrow night, earned its first series nomination Thursday morning, setting itself up against favorites "Mad Men" and "Boardwalk Empire."

The show, shared by NBC and DirecTV, also picked up nominations in the dramatic acting categories for stars Kyle Chandler, who plays Coach Eric Taylor, and Connie Britton.

Meanwhile, Carell, who left NBC's "The Office" in April, was recognized for his final season on TV with his sixth best comedy actor nomination.

He is up against Alec Baldwin of "30 Rock," Matt LeBlanc of "Episodes," Louis C.K. of "Louie," Johnny Galecki of "The Big Bang Theory," and last year's winner Jim Parson, also of "The Big Bang Theory."
