Ford To Be Released From Hospital

Doctors say former President Gerald Ford has made a full neurological recovery from the mild stroke he suffered last week and will be released from the hospital Wednesday morning.

Ford, 87, was admitted to the Philadelphia hospital Aug. 2 after suffering a stroke. He was in town attending the Republican National Convention.

"He's doing just terrific. We couldn't ask for anything better," said Penny Circle, chief of staff at Hahnemann University Hospital.

Doctors said Ford was in good condition and they were still monitoring his progress on coumadin, a blood-thinning medication. Ford also was still being treated with two antibiotics - clindamycin and levofloxacin - for an abscess that was removed from his tongue Saturday.

His slurred speech was caused by the abnormal growth on his tongue, and was not a result of the stroke, doctors said.

His wife, Betty, and his daughter, Susan, have been at the hospital with him for several days. The hospital said Ford and his family will head back to their home in Palm Springs, California.
