Ford recalling 850,000 vehicles

The Ford Motor Company (F) is recalling approximately 850,000 vehicles due to a potential issue with the restraints control module. The company said in a press release Friday the recall affects some 2013-14 Ford C-Max, Ford Fusion, Ford Escape and Lincoln MKZ models.

Ford said the module can experience a short circuit, which will cause the airbag warning to illuminate.

"Depending on the location of the short circuit, the deployable restraint systems (e.g., airbags, pretensioners, side curtains) may not function as intended in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. The short circuit may also affect the function of other systems that use data from the restraints control module, including stability control. In these cases, the corresponding warning indicator lamps would also illuminate," Ford said in the statement.

Approximately 746,000 of the recalled vehicles are in the U.S. and territories, nearly 83,000 in Canada and about 20,000 in Mexico.

The automaker did specify when and where affected models were built:

  • Certain 2013-2014 Ford C-Max vehicles, built at the Michigan Assembly Plant between Jan. 19, 2012 and Nov. 21, 2013
  • Certain 2013-2014 Ford Fusion vehicles, built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant between Feb. 3, 2012 and Aug. 24, 2013
  • Certain 2013-2014 Ford Escape vehicles, built at the Louisville Assembly Plant between Oct. 5, 2011 and Nov. 1, 2013
  • Certain 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ vehicles, built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant between April 25, 2012 and Sept. 30, 2013

Ford says says it is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem; dealers will replace the module free of charge.
