For Christmas, Fla., Holiday's a Crush

It's a pretty busy time of year for the post office in tiny Christmas, Florida.

Postal workers normally handle around 50 to 100 pieces of mail a day, but during the holiday season that number soars to as high as 10,000 daily, Postmaster Suzanne Young tells CBS News radio correspondent Peter King.

The reason? Many people from surrounding areas and around the world bring or send packages or cards to the little town, located around 30 miles east of Orlando, so they'll be re-mailed with the Christmas postmark.

"The mail gets run through a machine that sprays on the cancellation of the stamp and it says 'Greetings from Christmas, Florida,' and it's got little Christmas trees on it," Young said.

How does the small post office, which Young says only employs three people, handle the volume?

"We just work fast - very fast!" she said, laughing. "You have to be ready to ramp up and be very busy at this time of the year. But I think we all have the Christmas spirit and we're all very happy to be here and work in a different kind of post office."

While Christmas, Florida certainly has a unique attraction for customers, postal workers around the country are in the middle of the so-called busiest day of the year Monday.

To help ease the holiday crush, postal workers have suggestions for customers:

• Write print the address of the recipient on the front and side of the box.

• Write the address on a piece of paper and slip it inside the package just in case.

• Use thick, sturdy tape so packages don't come open.

• And make sure the zip code is correct because that's the way mail is sorted.

To help deal with the thousands and thousands of pieces of mail, post office workers usually work overtime on Monday.

Typically, Wednesday is the busiest delivery day of the year.
