Flyers Sign Ulf Samuelsson

The Philadelphia Flyers signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Ulf Samuelsson to a two-year contract.

Terms of the deal were not released Monday.

The 35-year-old Samuelsson is entering his 16th NHL season, having played for Hartford, Pittsburgh, the New York Rangers and Detroit. He had four goals and eight assists in 71 games for the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings last season.

"Ulf is an aggressive, high energy, veteran defenseman who would be very good on the ice for our team and would provide some enthusiasm and leadership both on and off the ice," team president and general manager Bob Clarke said in a statement.

"I feel very lucky to be part of an organization like the Flyers," Samuelsson said. "They're off to a little bit of a slow start here" but are still a contender this year. The Flyers are 1-5-1.

The 6-foot, 1-inch, 205-pound Samuelsson has scored 56 goals and 273 assists in 1,031 NHL games. With 2,395 penalty minutes, he ranks 17th on the NHL's career list.
